Spring is here. A season of birth, new beginning, renewal and growth. Ayurveda teaches us that like increases like. By its very nature springtime tends to increase Kapha, which is associated with colds, congestion, hay fever and allergies. The best time to invite a seasonal diet and lifestyle that lift us out from the heaviness, dullness, dampness and cold and into a bit more lightness, sharpness, dryness and heat into our lives to support our physiology in its natural process.
As intuitive as we are, you may already find yourself wanting lighter diet like fruit, vegetables and salads. You can support your body's natural desire to purify and renew by favouring the pungent, bitter and astringent tastes and by eating warm, light foods that are relatively easy to digest and drink warm beverages. This will help balance mucous production, regulate moisture levels and to open the channels of elimination which is critical for purification.
The sun rises earlier which may re-pattern your sleep so you may wake up earlier and create a stimulating and inspiring morning routine for yourself. Brush your teeth, scrape your tongue, apply a few drops of nasya oil to your nasal passage and drink some warm lemon water first thing in the morning. Make time for yoga to promote clarity and improve energy. This is also a good time of the year to push yourself a bit physically.
