All life is ruled by the dance between Yin and Yang. The duality of these two dynamic forces may seem to be opposite but they cannot exist independently, just like shadow cannot exist without light. Everything is in a constant state of flux, balancing and rebalancing into a state of perfect harmony.

Stress and illness are nature’s way of telling you that you’re out of balance. To stay healthy, happy and fulfilled, achieving yin-yang balance is the key!

Let’s explore what Yin and Yang mean

The moon is yin and sun is yang. The feminine is yin and masculine is yang. The cool and quiet is yin and warm and loud is yang. Contraction is yin and expansion is yang. Water is yin and fire is yang. Passive is yin and active is yang.

Yin and Yang are relative to each other and by managing the yin and yang qualities within us, it allow us to find harmony and ultimate state of health.

How to apply Yin and Yang in yourself and your life

Your lifestyle is mirrored by who you are in nature. The best place to understand how yin and yang plays a part in your life is to understand who you are as a person. Which are you more dominant? Answer the following questions to give you a guide of your yin-yang balance.

Do you by nature move fast OR slow?

Do you think excessively OR have moderate thoughts?

Are you an active outdoor person OR a passive indoor person?

Do you like physical activity (exercise) to be fast, rapid movement OR slow, steady movement?

Do you like coffee OR tea?

Do you like spicy food OR non-spicy food?

Do you enjoy warm weather OR cold weather?

Do you get angry easily OR it’s hard to get you upset?

If you’ve answered mostly YES to the first, then it reflects that you’re more yang and if your answered mostly to the later then it reflects that you’re more yin. And if you’re fairly even, then you’re quite balanced in your yin and yang! This is only a brief guide to better understand who you are in person so that you can better find balance in your life.

How to find your Yin-Yang balance

Like increases like. If you are yang in nature, you are naturally drawn to a yang lifestyle where you are constantly giving, doing and moving. If you’re yin in nature, you are naturally drawn to a yin lifestyle where you are receptive, being and stable.

Our life energy is fueled by yin-yang balance where we are given a reserved when we are born, and if we misuse it, it will deplete our system and health which stops us from enjoying life. To find yin-yang balance within ourselves and our life, we need to moderate our energy by the balance of giving and receiving so we can fully nurture our yin and yang.

One ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine text expressed the power and importance of Yin and Yang this way: “If you can understand Yin and Yang you can hold the universe in your hands.”
