Your body is your temple, you want to keep it clean so you can live in it comfortably and to allow your body to perform the best for you. Think about all the things that you feed into your body over the last 365 days, the good (eg. nutritious diet, balance lifestyle, yoga and good sleep) and the bad (eg. toxic food and alcohol, stressors of life, lack of movement and sleep). The kind of things you do on a daily basis gives you a choice to be the kind of person you want to be. This begins with how you treat your body. You can start the cleanse at any time and perhaps the New Year is the more ideal time for you to make a change!

Traditional practices such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda (the science of life) has brought forth its wisdom from over 5,000 years of how to kick-start your health by cleansing your body, mind and heart. Regular cleansing is an amazing opportunity to reassess your life and any areas that may be out of balance.

Top 5 cleanses for your organs

The colon (or large intestine) is one of the main elimination channels. Having regular bowel movement to discharge excess waste and toxins is a sign of health. According to TCM and Ayurveda, the colon is at its optimal activity between 5 - 7am. To help kick-start your digestion, wake up with a glass of warm lemon water or a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in warm water (you may like to add honey to sweeten it!) You can also massage your abdomen (2 hours before or after a meal) in a clockwise following the direction of the intestines to assist break up of any stagnancy. According to TCM, the colon is the primary organ related to letting go physically and emotionally.

Liver and Gallbladder

The liver and gallbladder process toxic waste (including alcohol and fats) that the body encounters. When you feel angry, irritable and stress, these emotions get stored in these organs according to TCM. By cleansing the liver and gallbladder, it allows you to experience greater clarity and creativity. Just like the colon, having lemon or apple cider vinegar in warm water can activate the cleansing process and prepare it for better digestion.

The Kidneys excrete wastes through the urine. One way to flush and eliminate the accumulation of toxins is by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. According to TCM, the kidneys are related to fear and can easily be depleted by stress. By keeping your lower back warm and supported assist the kidneys health.

The lungs filter all the air we take in and release out, which makes it a powerful organ of detoxification. Breathing in fresh air is vital energy (qi) that fuel your entire being. The closest is to be in nature and to focus on breathing deeply into the lower part of the lungs where you feel your belly expand and contract for the health of your lungs.

The skin is considered your first defence against outside influences which plays an important role in detoxification. By increasing the amount you sweat through sauna, hot yoga or any movement and exercises, it releases unwanted toxins that are trapped in the tissues. You can also try dry skin brushing in a sweeping motion towards the heart to remove dead skin cells, assist circulation of blood and lymph flow.

tongue scraper for digestion

Did you know your tongue is a mirror to your internal organs? When you scrape your tongue first thing in the morning, it helps to stimulate the organs and removes overnight build-up of bacteria and toxins. You will begin to notice the changes of your health and digestion when you start to scrape your tongue with a stainless steel (not your toothbrush as it pushes bacteria back into your body!).
